Discussion on Reading

Deep questions can support students in becoming effective self-regulated learners by getting them to question what they know, what they want to know and what they learned. This is very important because questioning knowledge and then figuring out what may be unclear to you, is how students grow as learners. Questioning your knowledge is so important because it does help learners to become self-regulated. Rather than having a teacher come in and ask what you have learned or what you know on a subject, you can ask yourself these questions. This makes learning a much more individual task, rather than one that has to be constantly guided by the teacher. Having a self-regulating class not only makes the classroom environment better for the teacher, but it also creates a healthy learning environment for the other students in the classroom. The questions that are needed are: What do you know? What do you want to know? And what have you learned? A great way to implement these questions is to create a think sheet for your students to follow and be able to reflect on their learning.
